Book Lovers! On October 21, two leading literary lights meet up at Gotham to talk about The Novel. Andrew Stuttaford is Chief Fiction Reviewer for The New Criterion and one of the country's most respected—and consistently amusing—critics. Jonathan Leaf is an acclaimed playwright whose new novel City of Angles was called "light, literary entertainment at its best" by Kirkus and named a Best New Book by The New York Post.
Inspired by Milan Kundera’s classic The Art of the Novel and Joseph Epstein’s new book, The Novel, Who Needs It?, published by Encounter Books and recently reviewed by Leaf for the National Review, Leaf and Stuttaford will guide us through an exploration into the art and state of the novel today. They'll present their irreverent takes on what fiction is and what it ought to be, answer questions and, most of all, show devotion to the example of the best writers past and present—from the father of the form Cervantes to the recently departed Milan Kundera—while encouraging you to enjoy our cocktails and stay for dinner!
3:30-4:45pm: Arrivals and refreshments
3:45-4:30pm: A conversation with Jonathan Leaf and Andrew Stuttaford
4:30-5:30pm: Cocktails & canapés
*We recommend making a reservation should you want to stay for dinner after the event
